Biography

Fergus McCready was appointed Section Principal Oboe with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House in 2024. He started working with the company during his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, concluding his trial period with Antonio Pappano’s memorable final production as Director, Andrea Chénier.

Fergus attended Wells Cathedral School before completing his time at the Academy in 2023, receiving the prestigious Regency and Bicentenary Awards at his graduation. Fergus is thrilled to have recently been made an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music and to be named on the Classic FM’s Rising Stars list for 2025.

Fergus enjoys playing Guest Principal Oboe regularly with the UK’s leading orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Academy of St Martins in The Fields and Aurora Orchestra.

Alongside his orchestral career, Fergus has made recent solo appearances. Most notably, he has performed the Strauss Oboe Concerto at Cadogan Hall and a variety of Baroque concerti in Devon.

Hailing from Devon, Fergus gained a great passion for the outdoors. When he’s not playing the oboe or making reeds, he enjoys going back home to surf the southwest coastline and run on the trails of Dartmoor.

Fergus plays a Marigaux M2 Oboe.
